In this update, explore how PeterPaul solenoid valves deliver solutions to meet your specific needs.
What Is a Flame Arrester?
A flame arrester is a safety device designed to allow gas to pass through while stopping a flame, preventing a larger fire or explosion. These devices are essential for tanks and equipment containing flammable materials, as they dissipate the heat from a flame front and prevent flames from entering storage tanks or pipelines.
Why Flame Arresters Are Essential
A flame arrester, also called a deflagration arrester or flame trap, allows gases to flow while stopping flames. They are commonly installed in fuel storage tank vents, pipelines, burner air intakes, safety cabinets, and exhaust systems to prevent flame propagation in industrial equipment.
In facilities handling flammable vapors, ignition sources can trigger flames that travel through piping, vents, or process equipment, leading to dangerous deflagrations. Flame arresters act as a critical defense, quenching flames before they spread and stopping potentially explosive mixtures from propagating further.
Different Types of Flame Arresters
Flame arresters are not one-size-fits-all. The right type depends on the application, the gas or vapor being handled, and the flow conditions. Here’s a closer look at the main types:
In-Line Flame Arresters
These are installed directly in pipelines or vent lines to stop flames traveling along the pipe. They allow continuous gas flow while protecting downstream equipment. Common applications include chemical plants, refineries, and fuel pipelines.
End-of-Line Flame Arresters
Placed at the outlet of tanks or vessels, these arresters protect storage tanks by stopping external flames from entering. They allow gases to vent safely while preventing ignition from outside sources. They are ideal for fuel storage tanks, tanker trucks, and process vessels.
Detonation Flame Arresters
Designed for high-risk environments, these arresters can stop both slow-moving flames (deflagrations) and high-speed detonations. They are essential in refineries, petrochemical plants, and gas processing facilities where explosive mixtures are possible.
Back-Pressure Flame Arresters
These are used in situations with little to no gas flow, such as safety cabinets or emergency shut-off systems. They prevent flames from propagating through stagnant or low-velocity gas zones, providing localized protection.
SESCO Flame Arresters
SESCO offers in-line deflagration flame arresters designed to protect vapor systems and pipelines. These devices allow the free passage of vapors while preventing flame propagation through piping systems, helping safeguard storage tanks, processing equipment, and vapor recovery systems
1″ Male x 1″ Female BSPF In-line Deflagration Flame Arrester (Model 41109)
Designed for compact installations in smaller vapor or gas pipelines, it features a durable brass body combined with a stainless steel ribbon coil flame-proof element that effectively dissipates heat and quenches flames before they can travel further along the pipeline. The ribbon coil element has a standard gap (MESG) of 0.65 mm and is suitable for Gas Group IIB3 applications.
Built with a brass body and two certified stainless steel ribbon coils, the device dissipates flame energy and prevents flame propagation within the pipeline. The flame arrester is manufactured in accordance with Directive 2014/34/EU and the harmonized standard EN ISO 16852:2016. This flame arrester is designed to prevent flames from traveling back into the tank or piping system, isolating the ignition within a limited area.
Similar to the other models, it incorporates a brass body and a stainless steel ribbon coil flame-proof element engineered to extinguish flames within the arrester element. This model is typically used in fuel storage facilities, vapor recovery systems, and industrial vapor pipelines where dependable flame arresting capability is required for larger flow systems.
Aside from these, SESCO also offers detonation flame arresters, free vent flame arresters (FVFA), and threaded in-line flame arresters. Detonation models protect long or manifolded pipelines, FVFAs safeguard vertical vents and tank tops from low-pressure deflagrations, and threaded in-line units stop confined deflagrations in smaller pipelines. All models use spiral-wound ribbon flame cells to provide reliable flame quenching while maintaining maximum flow.
